Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as an infant. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has been for generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just an elementary school student. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of a member of the jury, and then examine their junk. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
